Since childhood, many of us have acquired the art of project management. From pursuing hobbies, to managing relatives and other things that comprise of basic learning, we have learned how to be project managers in one way or the other. 

Project management is an intrinsic part of the everyday routine of the student and teacher relationship. Planning curriculum, completing homework and assignments, organizing trips, preparing for exams are just some of the few projects.  Not only can these things be managed, but when given the right tools and techniques, they can be managed efficiently.

Setting up goals and simplifying tasks

Proj man skillsWhen a student decides what they want to accomplish in life, they will be motivated and inspired to complete the task themselves without pressure from teachers and most times without a tangible reward.

Their goals can be both short-term and long-term. However, it is the duty of the teachers to explain to the child what a goal is, help the child refine them, break it all down to smaller steps, and keep a constant check on whether or not they are heading towards the right direction.

To make it more exciting for the students, create a visual reminder of goals like a student goal ladder, or a goal board. This would captivate their interest and help them focus on their set goals.

Choosing, Monitoring and Implementing Strategies

While goals setting and task simplification are vital for project management, there are certain things which do not go as planned. Students should be taught to choose strategies which, when implemented can help in completing their tasks easily. They can select the materials while deciding on the processes that will work best for them. Noting down important points on a notepad can prove helpful and be used for future reference. This would aid them in monitoring and implementing the best strategies to accomplish their goals.

Adopting problem-solving techniques

There are some cases when few students hit a creative block and suddenly feel perplexed. It is frustrating for the student if the strategies fail to deliver. For this reason, students’ minds should be filled with methods on how to solve a problem, and deal with issues as they arise. In such moments, they should be taught to tackle challenges by themselves. This would boost their confidence and strengthen their minds to grow up into problem-solvers and critical thinkers. This will help them monitor their progress and adjust their approach going forward.

It is worth mentioning that project management is an important element to guarantee success with project-based learning techniques and initiatives in the classroom. By utilizing the project management's core guidelines and principles, you can augment the success of your initiatives, irrespective of whichever stage the students may find themselves.
